ANDREW IANUZZI
Andy began his legal career as a bankruptcy and intellectual-property litigator at a prominent New York commercial firm. After transitioning to the field of international criminal law, he defended clients in complex cases before UN-backed tribunals in Sierra Leone and Cambodia. As an independent legal consultant, he has advised individual and institutional clients on a number of human rights issues. With over ten years of international legal experience, Andy has conducted human rights investigations in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia, Cambodia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Burma. Over the years, he has established and maintained strong professional contacts in various high-risk environments. His experience encompasses due diligence, stakeholder engagement, risk-management analysis, and human-rights impact assessment. Andy is well positioned to advise and assist businesses with regard to respecting human rights—from broader policy perspectives to specific on-the-ground impacts.
BENJAMIN JOYES
Ben specialises in international criminal law, international human rights, extradition, complex financial crime and rule of law development. As a practising barrister called to the English Bar in 2010, he appears as an advocate before international tribunals and the courts of England and Wales. He has acted in some of the most high profile international criminal cases of the last decade, in particular before the International Criminal Court. He also regularly represents individuals and requesting States in extradition proceedings before Westminster Magistrates’ Court and the Administrative Court in London. Ben has significant expertise in complex cases involving international fraud, bribery and corruption. Thanks to his expertise in diverse but complementary areas of law, Ben brings a unique perspective to all of his cases. He has extensive experience drafting incisive arguments concerning legally and factually complex issues, and is highly regarded for the quality of his written work. Having worked on the ground with legal and investigative teams in Africa, South East Asia and Europe, Ben prides himself on his collaborative approach to complex, document-heavy cases.
JESSICA FINELLE
Jessica is an Oxford and Sorbonne-educated French lawyer with experience before French and African criminal courts. She has worked for 8 years at a Paris-based law firm, Fischer, Tandeau de Marsac, Sur & Partners, specializing in complex national and international crime. Often in collaboration with the (then) President of the Paris Bar, Jessica has represented businesses, public enterprises, and individuals on a variety of cases ranging from white collar crime to war crimes. Her notable cases include: civil party lawyer in the Duch case before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia; civil party lawyer for Mrs. Arafat in the French investigation into the death of Yasser Arafat; civil party lawyer for the Cambodian opposition leader, Mr. Sam Rainsy, in the French investigation into an attempted assassination/grenade attack; defence counsel for Karim Wade, the former Senegalese Government Minister accused of international financial crimes and tried before Senegalese courts; defence counsel for a suspect charged with terrorist offences involving an international conspiracy in France, Tunisia and Netherlands.
NICHOLAS ROBSON
Nicholas Robson is a security and justice reform specialist who has worked extensively in International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law since 2000. He previously practised criminal law as a barrister in the courts of England and Wales from 1994 before working at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), first as a judge’s advisor and then subsequently as defence counsel at the ICTY and International Criminal Court. As a senior manager, he also led the justice sections of three EU Common Security and Defence Policy missions, as well as several UK government-funded justice initiatives, managing large teams and delivering a wide range of complex security and justice reform work. Nicholas’s field experience includes The Balkans, Palestine, Somalia and Pakistan, enabling hm to witness first-hand the impact of climate breakdown on fragile states and communities. More recently, Nicholas has been involved in various initiatives to tackle climate change, including developing local government mitigation plans and reforestation projects.
ALEX BATESMITH
Alex was one of the founding partners of Global Diligence LLP. He has twenty years’ experience as an international and domestic criminal lawyer and consultant in national and international human rights, criminal law, transitional justice and rule of law issues. He works for both public and private clients, including governments, non-governmental and inter-governmental organisations, in three main fields of expertise: national and international human rights law and regulation (including sustainability and business and human rights); justice sector capacity building (including access to justice) in developing or transitional justice environments; and post-conflict justice (including international criminal law and international humanitarian law). He is a law lecturer at Liverpool University and a qualified mediator.
