Seychelles: Truth Commission

The African state of Seychelles is currently one of the most peaceful on the continent. However, beneath the surface, deep scars and divisions stemming from the 1977 coup continue to undermine society’s political, economic, and social cohesion. The one-party state that ruled from 1977 until the 1990s perpetrated a range of serious human rights violations that have never been addressed. The Seychelles President and both the main political parties are keen to establish transitional justice mechanisms, including a Truth Commission.

GD partner, Richard Rogers was engaged by the Seychelles National Assembly Committee on Truth and Reconciliation Committee to help draft a law establishing the Truth Commission.

Rogers met with President Faure at State House to discuss the challenges ahead. Keen to see the TRC a success, the President stated: "Our generation can not leave this burden for our children and grand children to carry."
